Bulimia  will affect 3 out of every 100 women at some time in their lives. The effects of bulimia are less apparent than the effects of anorexia. A person with bulimia can maintain a normal weight for their height and they may outwardly give the impression of coping well with life’s challenges.

Binge eating disorder involves frequent bingeing episodes that a person feels they cannot control. Contrary to people with bulimia, people with binge eating disorder do not use compensatory mechanisms to get rid of the calories. This may result in considerable weight gain.

Although the eating disorder symptoms are only experienced by one person, the effects of these eating disorders go far beyond the sufferers’ own lives. Relatives and friends are often drawn into a painful downward spiral, some more than others.
